Premature loss of baby teeth (long before the anticipated eruption of the permanent tooth) can cause loss of arch length and can lead to unnecessary extraction of permanent teeth of to orthodontic treatment that would have otherwise been unnecessary. A simple appliance that uses bands usually cemented to molars and simple soldered wires can maintain the space until the permanent tooth erupts.
